SAES Chemicals’ technology platform enables the preparation of polymer beads with average particle size below 1 micron with a narrow particle size distribution.
This makes the beads ideally suited for dispersion within a further organic matrix, or for deposition on substrates to make thin, tightly packed coatings.
EVOH Beads (for enhanced O₂-barrier performance)
State-of-the-art PVOH coatings for flexible packaging applications exhibit good oxygen-barrier properties, but their performance is known to drop off rapidly under high humidity conditions. In order to counteract this, blends of PVOH and EVOH polymers can be utilized, though this requires the use of an organic solvent. Addition of EVOH in bead form (250-400nm), however, not only allows direct use of the water-based PVOH formulation, but was shown to improve the O₂ barrier performance of the final coating even further.
Natural Anti-Oxidant Capsules
As OEMs within the cosmetics, personal care and food industries react to changes in legislation, they turn now towards greener, more sustainable solutions. SAES Chemicals has developed capsules with natural active ingredients and biopolymer-based shells. An example of such a material is natuaral product with anti-oxidant properties combined with a natural polymer to form composite capsules.
